Historical Significance

Potton’s history is defined by resilience and trade.

  • The Great Fire of Potton (1783): Much of the town centre was destroyed by a fire that started in a clover stack. This led to the rebuilding of the town in the distinct Georgian style seen today around the Market Square.

  • The Market Square: Historically a hub for horse fairs and agricultural trade, the square remains the heart of the town, featuring the iconic Clock House (built in the 19th century).

  • Railway Heritage: Potton was once a stop on the "Varsity Line" connecting Oxford and Cambridge. While the station closed in the 1960s, the old station building remains a local landmark.
