Potton residents: Starting Monday, March 30, 2026, the way we recycle is changing. As part of a Central Bedfordshire-wide initiative to streamline waste management and hit sustainability targets, new rules for glass and food waste are coming into effect.
Here is your definitive guide to the changes at The Hollow, Market Square, and every doorstep in SG19.

1. The Big Change: Glass Now Goes in the Recycling Bin
The most significant update is the "Co-mingled Glass" rollout. You no longer need to trek to the local bottle banks for everyday jars and bottles.
What’s allowed: Wine/beer bottles, jam jars, and sauce bottles (rinsed).
What’s NOT allowed: Pyrex, mirrors, lightbulbs, or drinking glasses. These have different melting points and will contaminate the batch.
The Benefit: This move is expected to increase Potton’s recycling rate by an estimated 15% by making glass disposal more convenient.
2. New Weekly Food Waste Collections
For those living in flats or shared complexes in Potton who previously lacked food waste services, weekly collections will officially begin the week of March 30.
Check your mail: Central Bedfordshire Council is delivering silver kitchen caddies and liners to eligible households mid-March.
What goes in: Fruit/veg peels, meat bones, eggshells, and coffee grounds.
3. Collection Day Shifts
Because the routes are being redesigned to accommodate the new glass weight, your collection day may change. * Look for the Tag: Council teams are currently attaching "Change of Day" tags to bin handles across Potton.
Check Online: Use the Central Bedfordshire Postcode Finder to verify if your Monday slot has moved to a Tuesday or Wednesday.
